You Can't Define Someone By Who They Used To Be

Grace is not pretending nothing happened. It is refusing to keep the receipt.

Open hands in soft natural light

We live in a world that is quick to label and slow to forgive.

One old post. One season of foolishness. One decision made in pain. And a person is filed away for good, defined forever by the lowest moment of their life.

That is not how the Father sees us. People grow. People repent. People become new.

The Bible Is Full of People Who Changed

Moses was a murderer. Rahab sold her body. David committed adultery and arranged a death. Peter denied Christ out loud. Paul hunted believers before he wrote half the letters we live by.

If God defined people by who they used to be, most of Scripture would simply not exist.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.2 Corinthians 5:17

Why We Hold On to People's Past

Sometimes it is caution, and caution can be wise. Often it is something less noble. Remembering someone's worst chapter keeps us comfortable in our own. If they cannot change, we do not have to either.

  • We repeat their history as though it were current news.
  • We interpret their growth as performance.
  • We wait for evidence that we were right about them.
  • We call our judgement discernment.

Grace is not pretending nothing happened. It is refusing to keep the receipt.

Discernment Is Not the Same as Condemnation

This is not a call to be naive. Trust is rebuilt over time and boundaries are healthy. Some people are still living in the very thing you are being asked to overlook, and wisdom takes note of that.

The difference is direction. Discernment watches where a person is heading. Condemnation stares at where they have been.

And If You Are the One Being Defined

You are not your worst year. You are not the version of you that people prefer to remember because it suits their story. Keep walking. Let the fruit answer for you.

God is not waiting for you to be respectable. He is calling you forward, and He remembers what He has already forgiven far less than people do.

People grow.
People repent.

People become new.
